Managing Holiday Stress

As we all gear up for Thanksgiving and the holiday season, check out this post from AACC's Personal Counseling Services.

The holidays are often a fun and enjoyable time for many but can also be very stressful.  Here are a few tips to help you cope throughout the holiday season and beyond.

  1. Take time for you.  Make time to do the activities/hobbies that you enjoy even if only for 20-30 minutes a day.

  2. Use a relaxation strategy: Get in the habit of practicing a relaxation strategy such as deep breathing, aromatherapy, mediation, visualization, etc.

  3. Practice gratitude: identify 3 things you are grateful for each day.

  4. Avoid multitasking: it increases stress levels and decreases productivity.  Try making a list and focusing on 1 item at a time.

  5. Talk it out.  If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk to a friend, family member, partner, or anyone you trust.

  6. Prioritize exercise: It’s good for our body and mind.  Find easy ways to incorporate it into your daily life: park further away, take the stairs, put on music and dance, and take a walk with a friend, family member, partner, or pet.  The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week.

  7. Get your sleep: most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night.  Being well-rested helps us to cope better.

As always, Personal Counseling Services is here to support you.
