The fourth edition of AACC’s research publication The Journal of Emerging Scholarship that was released on April 25 features 12 papers by over 20 students.

This year’s volume covers topics in business, botany, anthropology, environmental science, public policy, ecology, robotics, public health, architecture, physics and more.

Some students will be published for the first time on research they did in groups during the 2024 Research-Intensive Summer Experience.

Third-year student Bethany Bayer said she is proud to publish her microbiology research on the digestive tract.

“I feel proud because … I thought I was too stupid to get involved with microbiology,” Bayer said. “I work on other research projects, but I’ve never been a part of like the writing. … I can finally confidently say, like, I’m good at this, and this is something that I’m gonna do with my life.”

Earth science student Meredith Baxter, who completed ecology research on the forest between East and West Campus during RISE, encouraged their peers to conduct research.

“Just go straight into it. Don’t second guess yourself,” Baxter said.

For those that want to be published in a future edition of the journal, STEM Coordinator Matt Bem from the journal’s editorial board mentions the research interest form that's available to connect students of any major to opportunities.

“Students and faculty both may have the preconception that research … is geared towards stem exclusively, but I want to dispel that notion. … If students are interested in research in any discipline, they can fill out this research interest form, and we can connect students with faculty mentors and with programs that are best suited to what they're interested in,” Bem said. “You could be an English major and participate in ecology research.”
